Asylum of the Daleks Simulcast Sets New Records

The world's greatest television show returned to planet Earth last weekend with the episode, Asylum of the Daleks. Series 7 of Doctor Who debuted last weekend on television in the UK and North America whilst it received an online airing in Australia. Full details below on the success of the first episode below:

Consolidated figures from the US over the weekend showed that the Series 7 premiere delivered BBC America’s highest-rated, most watched telecast ever in Live + Same Day. Doctor Who delivered 1.55 million viewers and ranked #1 in cable (excluding sports) among A25-54 in its timeslot. This record audience was 23% up from the Series 6 premiere in 2011.

In Australia, ABC made the series premiere available on the iView service immediately after UK transmission. The episode attracted a record number of overnight views which stood at 75,000, and nearly 130,000 have watched in total since it became available. The episode is broadcast on ABC1 in Australia on Saturday 08 September.

Canadian broadcaster SPACE also reported strong figures, with over 620,000 viewers tuning in to watch Asylum of the Daleks. The episode is the second highest rated episode in series history on SPACE and was the most watched programme on Canadian television in its timeslot on Saturday night.

The international success of the show consolidated an impressive performance in the UK, where the Series 7 premiere was the highest rated show in its timeslot, pulling in an overnight average of 6.4 million viewers on Saturday evening.

It should be noted that full consolidated figures for the UK (ie. the ones that really matter) will be published next week with iPlayer figures to follow.

REVIEW: Asylum of the Daleks [Spoiler~free]

Series 7, Episode 1
ASYLUM OF THE DALEKS
Starring Matt Smith, Karen Gillan & Arthur Darvill

Written by Steven Moffat
Directed by Nick Hurran

Duration: 45mins
Airdate: TBC

Review by Cameron K McEwan

Opening episodes don't come much barmier and bonkers than the 2012 return of Skaro's finest in the first story of Series 7. Asylum of the Daleks may well feature every kind of Dalek ever, along with some you've possibly never seen before, but if you think this is some simple "spot the pepper~pot game" for forty five minutes then you're way off the mark. ++RE~CA~LI~BRATE!++

Steven Moffat's debut Dalek tale [what about The Curse of Fatal Death? - Ed.] finds The Doctor, Amy and Rory reunited at some unspecified point in the future from last year's Christmas special in the most unexpected of fashions. The Daleks need Team TARDIS to visit their asylum and take care of much~needed housekeeping. Despite their protestations, our triumphant trio of time travellers find themselves surrounded by a menagerie of the hateful Skarosians who didn't quite make the grade... ++RE~JECTS!++

And all this happens in a blisteringly fast~paced opening (perhaps a little too chaotic for my own liking but exhilarating nonetheless). The meat of the story is the relationship between The Doctor, Amy and Rory (with new facets to explore and shocks to digest); but there's also the race in time to save The Ponds becoming further infected by a most unpleasant affliction. And there's also a Dalek bump~inducing mystery to be solved at the heart of the asylum... ++IN~VES~TI~GATE!++

The cast are on top form, particularly Arthur Darvill who gets a real chance to shine with his trademark Rory humour coupled with a soupçon of sheer tragedy thrown in for good measure. The guest cast are also terrifically memorable, impressing greatly (the preview screening did not include end credits so I can't give props to them as I don't have their names). ++IN~TER~EST~ING!++

Nick Hurran, who did such an amazing job on The Girl Who Waited and Night Terrors, reaffirms his role as one of Doctor Who's truly great directors, flipping from the mundanity of earth life to the dank deep Dalek dungeons with ease and style. Real fear is injected once more into the sink plungers, becoming a new kind of entity; unnerving for us adults but I imagine pretty terrifying for the younger audience. ++GRAB~A~PILLOW!++ [That's enough, thank you - Ed.]

For those paying attention, there are some familiar Steven Moffat tropes raising their collective thematic heads, such as characters communicating extensively through screens (and the use of screens themselves) along with the notion of virtual life and death. SteeMo packs a Pandorica full of gags in there but uses the love of the threesome to tell the story and drive the drama. In some ways, it's reminiscent of classic Russell T Davies where monsters and catastrophic events were merely the backdrop to an even better and more engaging tale.

Asylum of the Daleks is a cracking series~opener but it's also a top~notch story that works incredibly well as a stand~alone episode for new viewers (not that anyone reading this will be). Dalek fans will be fascinated to see just how it furthers their myth and adds to their lore, whilst some may be disappointed at the lack of "every Dalek ever" action (not me though, it has to be said). Whether or not Asylum has reverberations for the future is yet to be seen and wonders if a return for the Daleks will be sooner, rather than later. On this form, I'd be more than happy to see them again in the near future.

The Daleks Are Back in DWM 447!

Included below are all the details on the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine (no. 447), out tomorrow, priced £4.50. Click on the fold~out cover above for a bigger, juicier version.

STEVEN MOFFAT IS SPILLING THE BEANS IN DWM 447

"We’re going to have the most Daleks we’ve had on screen ever – but they will be from every era, quite deliberately. We’re calling them in from everywhere! All of them! Even the Special Weapons Dalek. They'll all be there…" STEVEN MOFFAT talks in depth about his version of Doctor Who in an exclusive, revealing, in-depth, eight-page interview…

CONQUER AND DESTROY!
The Daleks are the most feared race of creatures in the entire universe and will stop at nothing to achieve their goal of total intergalactic domination. And they've concocted more than a few audacious schemes to achieve this aim – not all of which, it has to be said, have been entirely successful. JONATHAN MORRIS unearths the Daleks' own assessment of their successes and failures.

I AM NOT THE MOFF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR!
Doctor Who's commander-in-chief, Steven Moffat, writes exclusively for DWM in PRODUCTION NOTES! Find out what the Moff things of his nickname, how he's getting along (or not) with the script for the Christmas Special and what he had for lunch in New York!

FAREWELL TO PHILIP
PHILIP MADOC, who played four notable roles in Doctor Who in the 60s and 70s – including the War Lord in The War Games and Doctor Mehendri Solon in The Brain of Morbius – passed away in March of this year, at the age of 77. Marcus Hearn takes a look back at the actor's distinguished career and at his contribution to Doctor Who.

END OF AN ERA
COUNTDOWN TO 50 continues its season-by-season analysis of Doctor Who, and the mood is sombre as we reach 1980/81 with Series 18 and bid farewell to Romana, K9 and, of course, Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor as he takes his fateful fall from the Pharos Project radio telescope.

CHEMICAL REACTION!
The Third Doctor, Jo Grant and UNIT become involved in a green movement – in more ways than one – in a Welsh mining village. Giant maggots, toxic chemical waste, an insane super computer, a rather tasty fungus, and angry Welshmen – 1973's THE GREEN DEATH takes its turn under the microscope in THE FACT OF FICTION.

All the latest official news, TV and merchandise reviews, previews, a prize-winning crossword, competitions and much, much more!
